Thanks to folks at the Conway Village Community Church—“The Little Brown Church” right there in downtown—for hosting the North Country Women’s Gathering. Great turnout, great food, much laughter, and many stories that I’ll be telling for a long time.
Jane from Madison lived on a good sized piece of land where skunks abounded. This was not good for the dogs, so she and her husband set Havahart traps, and her husband, almost weekly, took the skunks away—far away Jane hoped, but did not ask.
She got a clue though when she and the dumpmaster got talking. “Yup,” he said, “We’ve had an awful run of skunks this year. Biggest run of skunks I’ve ever seen.”
Laura described another wild animal encounter. The woodchucks were raising havoc with her garden. Again with the Havahart. Woodchuck caught. Laura prepared to transport him elsewhere. The bumps of Bear Notch Road rattled the cage. She stopped, picked up some rocks to place around the cage for extra security.
Boy, that chuck was ugly. Gnashing and gnarling and snarling and generally unpleasant. Laura was a nervous wreck by they time the two of them got to the upper loop. He didn’t escape, but it was a harrowing experience for all concerned.
Laura says, if you’re going to catch a chuck in a Havahart, be sure to have a back-up pickup.
