Nancy Taylor told this story of town meeting in Sharon, a town of about 300 souls at the time. Folks gathered at the meeting hall, and a discussion arose about where exactly the town center was located. Vi Newton, the oldest resident, was tapped to resolve the controversy. “Well,” she said, “our one streetlight is right out front here, so I guess this is it.”
Which reminds me of another story of another town -- Plainfield, I think, but I’m not sure. Some folks at town meeting thought their one street light was costing too much in electricity and should be turned off. “But if you turn off the light,” a resident queried, “how would anybody traveling at night know they’d gone through town?”
