Drove to Olde Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, Mass., to hang out with 60 or so members of the Alpha Gamma chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honor society for current and retired teachers in the area. It was fun! Great buffet at the Oliver Wright Tavern that included corn relish and olde fashioned chicken pot pie. Great conversation. And stories. Here’s one of my favorites:
Mikey, just 4 years old, caught a virus that made him sick for several days and gave him big tummy aches. On the road to recovery, he got his appetite back. His mother offered him noodle soup. No, he didn’t want noodle soup. He wanted a grilled cheese sandwich.
She knew he shouldn’t have dairy products because that might bring the tummy aches back. So she grilled the sandwich with just a smidge of butter and hardly any cheese. The bread darkened, and the sandwich didn’t look like a regular grilled cheese, but she put it on a plate for Mikey, who took a bite, then pushed the sandwich aside.
“Is your tummy aching again?” Mother asked.
He thought for a minute or two. Then said, “I think I’m black toast intolerant.”
