Got an emergency call from Lindy Horton at Calef’s Country Store in Barrington. A new shipment of Live Free and Eat Pie books had arrived. Would I come by and sign them? Naturally I would. As I sat and applied my John Hancock, two friendly ladies joined me at the table. They were out gallivanting for the day.
That’s Ardis Marsden from Hudson holding a Pie, and Debbie Barfoot from Nashua enjoying Calef’s signature sandwich: the classic ham and snappy old cheese on anadama bread.
Reminded me of signing books at one of the BIG book stores. I was instructed to sit at a table by the sliding glass doors with a pile of my books to see if anybody might like to buy one. Lots of people passed through those doors, averting their eyes. I felt lonely. One lady forgot to avert her eyes, and I drew her in with my tractor beam. She picked up a copy. “Live Free and Eat Pie,” she said. “Can’t do it. Diabetic.” And put the book back on the pile.
So much for the glamour of being a famous author. Like I always say, “Just because you never heard of me, doesn’t mean I’m not famous.”
