At the Concord Public Library last week, a tall young man reminisced about his family ties to Berlin. He did not grow up there, but often visited his grandparents. In his family story, three of the St. Onge brothers made the high school hockey team at the same time. Some of their equipment was provided, but some they had to provide themselves. Money was tight in this family of fifteen children, so they were a bit rueful when they got home from school and said to their mother, Joan d’Arc St. Onge: “Mamere, we need three cups.”
Joan d’Arc St. Onge went straight to the cupboard and took out three little cups with saucers.
I retold this story last night in Stratham (not to be confused with Strafford or Stratford). The audience laughed heartily. As the laughter subsided and I was about to launch into the next bit of hilarity, the librarian, Tricia, said: “Oh, I get it!’ Delayed reaction. Which made us laugh even more.
Here she poses with a little cup – not the kind of cup the young hockey players needed. Observation: Librarians love to laugh, especially at themselves.
