Last night at Border’s in Concord, a small but enthusiastic group of six women gathered for New Hampshire stories, including Dee, who books local writers to visit and read from their work. I got kind of excited when a seventh woman stopped by. She said, “I’m sorry I have another meeting but . . . ”
I interrupted, catching her drift (I thought), “You want me to sign a book for you now!”
“No,” she said. “I just wondered if I could borrow one of these empty chairs.”
Sometimes the writing life is a humbling experience. But just look at our happy faces. That’s me in the middle, and Dee standing on the right. We love stories.
Tonight I’m at Barnes and Noble in Manchester. Wonder who’ll show up. Maybe the mayor. It could happen.
