We strive to publish beautiful books that highlight the essence of New England. Our latest endeavor, "The Islandport Guide to Lighthouses in Maine" by lighthouse historian Ted Panayotoff, does just that. You'll find color photos and vintage postcards, a special section on lighthouses where travelers can spend the night, and thanks to Ted, all kinds of helpful information on the 64 lighthouses that dot the bold coast and rugged islands of Maine.
Ted, who is also an outstanding American Lighthouse Foundation volunteer and guide, talked to us about his passion for lighthouses and shared a few stories of his experiences.
The lessons learned from the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse restoration are many. Some of the most important are the need for a clear vision and detailed planning to carry out the vision. The work cannot go forward without committed volunteers and support for the effort ashore with fund raising, etc. Community involvement is necessary for success. The lighthouse belongs to the community as much as to the organization working on the restoration.
Thanks so much for your thoughtful answers, Ted! To learn more about "The Islandport Guide to Lighthouses in Maine" and the author, visit here.
